If you’re going grey, buy Mexico Mode

This is the single most useful thing on this page. Regular Mode is a blue gel, and on grey or white hair a blue product can leave a cast. It’s the most consistent complaint about Mode anywhere, and it has nothing to do with how the gel performs.

Mexico Mode is the same formula in white. If there’s grey in your hair, that’s your bottle. It’s a limited edition, so when it’s gone we can’t reorder it.

So what actually separates them?

Scent, and that’s genuinely it. Mode’s original marine-and-clove smell is the one people recognise from barbershops — you either love it or you don’t. King Mode is the same gel for people who want something more masculine and less distinctive. Mexico Mode is the cleanest of the three.

If you already like Mode and you’re not going grey, there’s no reason to switch. If you’ve never liked the smell, King Mode solves it without changing how your hair behaves.

Two things almost everyone gets wrong

Blow dry it

Johnny B’s own instructions say to blow dry for best results, and it’s the step nearly everybody skips. Apply to damp hair and let it air dry and you get a heavier, flatter result than the gel was built for. Thirty seconds with a dryer is the difference.

It reactivates with water

Mode is water-soluble, which means you don’t need to reapply halfway through the day. Wet your hands, run them through, reshape. Most people burn through a jar because nobody told them this.

Who it’s for — and who it isn’t

• Good for: medium to thick hair, slick backs, defined styles, anyone who wants shine and a hold that can be reworked.
